Virgin Mary. 2020

A persons clothing isn’t an invitation or symbol of consent. We shouldn’t have to wear words on our bodies because our voices are ignored, we shouldn’t have to repeat ourselves to be heard and respected. This corset and intimate set becomes a commentary on the issues we still face today regarding consent - it is the ultimate trickery and power tool.

You are enticed by the corset and underwear’s ‘seductive association’, only to be confronted and dismissed by the hidden power of thread and voice that is embedded into the fabric. The text acts as a warning sign whilst the repetitive language is used to normalise these response of the wearer who refuses to be abused, oppressed or ignored.

It acts as an empowering weapon and armour for the wearer. In this case it allows me to express my anger over oppression whilst celebrating my female heritage and power in my voice as a victor to my assault.
