Button Dress. 2020

This piece was inspired by Yoko Ono’s performance Cutting, but instead of remaining passive, I wanted to explore the transformation from victim to victor and challenge the audience’s role in the process.

The dress is made from stained fabric created during an earlier performance, where I invited people to throw drinks—tea, coffee, wine, and beer—symbolising the stains of abuse. I then cut up the fabric and reassembled it into a dress, using buttons and patches. The audience was invited to undo the dress following specific instructions, confronting not only the intimacy of my nude body beneath but also the complexity of the buttons—each one representing a layer of trauma and healing.

Once the dress is undone, the audience must watch as I reassemble it, button by button, naked and exposed. This act of rebuilding becomes a visual representation of the healing process, forcing the viewers to witness the reconstruction of the impact they just had, symbolising the resilience and reclamation of power.
